A startup company in Colorado Springs, Colorado, says it can help physicians and other healthcare providers by selling prepaid medical gift cards to employers and caring family members.

Medical BackBone Radio welcomes Joseph "Joey" Truscelli, CEO of Life Gift Cards, who says the initial reception to his new venture has been overwhelming positive.

Life Gift Cards are particularly useful as physicians, hospitals and clinics find the percentage of self-pay patients skyrocketing.  Truscelli says that initially, his company is selling cards to cover mammograms - but plans to roll out payment cards for a wide variety of medical and dental procedures and lab tests.

MedicalBackBone Radio welcomes Steve Holloway, director of the Primary Care Office of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

Holloway estimates that more than 1 million Coloradoans live in a community that is underserved by primary health providers.  His office is charged with lowering barriers to primary care access.

Offering in-state physicians student loan forgiveness in exchange for working in underserved areas of Colorado is one of the key tools Holloway is able to use to encourage doctors to live and work in rural and low-income areas.

Funding for Holloway's office is provided through an effective public-private partnership.  Three foundations, in particular, contribute the bulk of the money used as incentives by the Primary Care Office: The Colorado Health Foundation; The Colorado Trust; and The Comprecare Foundation.
